I have a diamond sword that i made a couple of enchanted books to put on (Sharpness 3, Smite 4, and Bane of arthropods 4) the anvil let me put the sharpness book on with no problems but when I tried to put the other books on it said the end result would just be the sharpness sword. I tried buying another diamond sword and putting the smite book on there in hopes of trying to combine the two and that won't even work. Anyone know why?
those enchantments cant be added to the same item as they're all damage multiplying, you can only use one.
Smite IV is what you want if your going to be fighting mobs in general
Sharpness III is what you want for fighting players
Bane Of Arthopods isn't really worth it with how little arhropods there are in game, and also they generally have less health than undead which smite effects.
alright, but i should be able to add fire aspect and looting to the smite sword right?
yes. adding fire aspect II would be advised over I, think that allows for the pigs and stuff you kill to drop cooked bacon instead of raw, meaning you dont have to cook it in a furnace :D

Smite is for the undead, Zombies and Skeletons.
Sharpness is for flesh, Players, creepers, enderman etc.
Bane of Arthropods is for spiders
