I believe it was to show that you do not have enough of the items needed to trade.......

Mojang added this in 1.4.5 (I think), it makes it so after you trade a certain number of the same trade with a villager, it will no longer offer that deal to prevent abuse. Hope this Helps :D

ah so that means you can't rob them of emeralds anymore by only using the best deals like 18 wheat for 1 emerald?
