Youre in minecraft so != java else minecraft wouldnt run. more likely a mod is acting up or minecraft is meh

Render distance needs to be less than 8 chunks for me, if it's more I get the same problem

It was vanilla minecraft, gandalf. I was building a PvP map (Black Friday) with Niro at the time. I looked up at the jungle and that was what happened. A few seconds later, as I looked around some more, I saw a mass of blocks (not sure what type) at about a 20-30 degree angle rotating in a circle. Something was messed up that session. When I restarted MC, it fixed.

Could somebody explain the rotating block thing? I'm not sure how that came to be.

Turn your render distance down.
